What is Energy?

  • Energy is in everything around us. It is in the air you breath, the water you drink and the food you eat. It is in the trees that grow as well as the wood we use after the tree is dead.

  • Energy is the power to change things. It can make things hot or cold, it can make things move or stop, it can grow things and shrink things.

  • Energy is the ability to do work and can produce: Warmth, Light, Sound, Movement, Growth or Powers Technology.

  • Energy cannot be destroyed or created. It can only be transformed. This is Law of Conservation it is also called the First Law of Thermodynamics.

  • Some energy is always lost in a transfer. No energy transfer is 100% efficient.

Think about it!

Below are examples of energy. Look at each picture and think about how each one has energy. How it can change into a different form of energy and how it can do work?

chemical, sun energy
chemical energy
electricity
mechancial energy
sound energy
magnetic energy
hydro power
gravity
